Pet In-House Laboratory

Fitchburg Veterinary Hospital’s cutting-edge in-house laboratory allows us to diagnose problems and begin treatment on your pet much faster than ever before. In less than 10 minutes, we can perform a complete blood count (CBC), which measures the quantity and quality of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. A CBC can tell you a lot about your pet, such as whether he or she is dehydrated, anemic (has an insufficient number of red blood cells), or has an infection.

We offer a wide range of diagnostic tests. Among the standard health and wellness services offered are, but are not limited to:

Blood Tests
Complete Blood Count
Blood Chemistry Panel
Urinalysis
Infectious Disease Screening
Fecal

Blood Tests

These are critical to your pet's health and can be used for anything from detecting pathogens like bacteria and viruses to reducing or eliminating complications from anaesthesia during surgery.

Complete Blood Count

A complete blood cell count reveals the overall health of your pet's blood, including the relationship between red and white blood cells and platelets. This allows us to assess the oxygen level in the blood, the presence of disease, and any clotting issues.

Blood Chemistry Panel

A blood chemistry panel provides a comprehensive picture of your pet's overall health, metabolism, and internal organs. It can detect liver disease, kidney disease, and diabetes. This type of screening is used to check electrolytes and potassium levels as well as the function of the thyroid gland.

Urinalysis

This is an important test for your pet's kidney health because it can detect a urinary tract infection, diabetes, or urinary crystals. There are several methods for collecting urine. The first step is to collect a sample of urine in a clean container. Alternatively, your veterinarian may choose to use a sterile catheter or cystocentesis, which involves inserting a sterile needle into the bladder. All of these procedures are risk-free and produce clean samples.

Infectious Disease Screening

We offer rapid tests to detect tick-borne pathogens such as Lyme disease, heartworm disease, Feline Leukemia Virus, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, and Giardia.

For complicated Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, and dermatologic cases, we offer state-of-the-art PCR testing.

Fecal

Fecal tests are run to identify parasites such as tapeworms, roundworms, coccidia, and Giardia.
